When someone is searching for information on the web, they will usually visit a search engine and type in words that they think best describe what they are looking for. The search engine then scans its database and returns the listing pages with results that best match the words submitted.
These words used by online searches are called keywords or search terms. In your experiences using a search engine, you have discovered that a single word will generate results that are very broad and frequently irrelevant. To fine-tune your search, you need to use a number of words or a phrase. This often provides a more relevant search result.
In your business, you may be dependent on regional or local business. With this in mind, when you write your listing descriptions, utilize word combinations that include your city's name and references to nearby cities and the region(s) from which you draw customers.
Put yourself in your potential customer's shoes. Imagine the words and descriptions they would submit to the search engine when they are looking for the services and products you provide. You may find it helpful ask your existing clients and customers how they would search and expect to find your products or services.
Analyze your business carefully and think of all the words and phrases that relate to your company or product.
One thing the search engines do not like and it will hurt a website's ranking is keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing is just like it sounds, stuffing your website text with the same keywords over and over.
Here is a good example of how Joe's Flower Shop has keyword stuffed their text, "Joe's Flower Shop sells the best flowers with the freshest flowers of any flower shop in town. Our flower shop can deliver your flower arrangement faster than any other flower shop."
